Streaming Stories is a website showcasing a community education programme in which a wide range of community groups made digital stories and films for the internet.
Launched in 2003 in Swindon, a town in the UK, the first Streaming Stories project involved 100 residents from all ages and backgrounds. For six months, ten community groups met at libraries, family centres and youth clubs, exchanging their knowledge and creativity in a project that included a chat room and special digital conversation area.
The professionally designed site includes many short films, alongside other media made by the groups, which can be found under the ‘Films & Stories’ links – there are some selected highlights alongside more extensive archive links. The media includes all genres from documentary to animation and humour. When clicked on, a pop-up window is opened to display a QuickTime video or other relevant media file.
Although the media content is the main focus of the site, there are other pages offering forums and message boards. These are aimed at encouraging the communities to keep in contact, alongside users of the site.
