Claire McVinnie’s film on friends’ memories of Dundee artist Vince Rattray forms an edition of Channel 6 Broadcasting’s television programme, ‘Art in Scotland’.
A very well-known figure in Dundee, described by friends as striking, handsome and bright, the artist became disillusioned with the art market but just loved the area, he lived for Dundee, worked in Dundee and died in Dundee. The film is illustrated with many shots of his diverse works, which show closely and wittily observed local people and typical Dundee scenes.
The programme is shot in a local Turkish restaurant which was hosting an exhibition of a selection of Rattray’s works as a celebration of his life on the first anniversary of his death. The owner says he first met Rattray as a student and mounted the exhibition as a tribute to a good friend. Many of the artist’s friends and relatives gathering at the restaurant speak of his life and describe their favourite paintings. This video recording lasts 7 minutes and 48 seconds.
