A video edition of Channel 6 Broadcasting’s ‘Art in Scotland’ featuring a major exhibition of the Scottish Colourists at the Dean Gallery.
Curator Phil Long is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic expert on the Scottish Colourists and he talks with confidence about the four artists and the substantial body of their work in this exhibition. This short programme is packed with an incredible number of facts about the artists’ lives and their mutual connections.
Hunter, Cadell, Fergusson and Peploe were all born in the late 19th century and studied in France in the early 20th century, coming to the fore in Edinburgh, London and Paris from around 1910 onwards.
Fergusson and Peploe became particularly close friends. They were both born in Edinburgh, established themselves in the city and then moved to Paris in the mid 1890s. All four had a connection with Paris at some point and exhibited alongside each other in Paris in 1924.
As Phil Long delivers a brief but detailed biography of each of the artists we are shown a selection of their work from the exhibition.
