A video edition of Channel 6 Broadcasting’s ‘Art in Scotland’ in which Laura Ford and Carol Rhodes, contributors to the 5th British Art Show, describe the motivation behind their separate works.
Laura Ford’s exhibition grew from a series of sculptures she had already made, using the imagery of small girls created in floral sofa-style upholstery. Looking at the sculptures it is no surprise to hear that the work was inspired by sitting in stuffy middle-class living rooms.
Carol Rhodes’ paintings resemble oblique aerial photographs. She points out that when you are high up you see more and get a feeling of being in control, but if you go too high you lose control and get a kind of agoraphobic panic, and says in her work she is interested in keeping the subject on the line between these two extremes. Rhodes explains that she first gets a strong idea of what she wants to paint and then manipulates photographs and other images to fit her vision.
Both interviews are illustrated with shots of their work in the exhibition. This video recording lasts 3 minutes and 56 seconds.
