An edition of the TV series ‘Art in Scotland’ featuring Valerie Mrejen’s exhibition of videos at the Tramway gallery and Stanley Kubrick’s photographs at Inverleith House.
The first item is recorded at the Tramway as Valerie Mrejen introduces her collection of short films. They are all based on ordinary household situations, but re-written and performed by actors. We see some off-screen shots of the videos by the French artist, with English subtitles, as she explains that they are an exploration of our use of language in everyday dialogue.
The second part of the programme features an exhibition ‘The Photographs of Stanley Kubrick 1945-1950’ at Inverleith House. Professor Rainer Crone from the University of Munich explains that this great filmmaker had been a photographer before he started making movies and discusses how they started to research Kubrick’s early still photographs.
It emerges that Kubrick had been a gifted young staff photographer for Look magazine and Robert Morgan’s interview is illustrated with a large number of stunning photographs originally taken for the magazine.
Professor Crone explains that even in the early photographs you could see that Kubrick wanted to tell stories, the pictures always forming part of a sequence illustrating an unfolding story. Crone gives a fascinating insight into Kubrick’s photography and the programme is worth watching for the splendid black and white images from the exhibition. This video recording lasts 17 minutes and 56 seconds.
