A video edition of Diverse TV looking at the work of the Council of British Pakistanis (Scotland), the role of Tai Chi in Scottish health care, and provision for the care of elderly Chinese is Edinburgh.
Mrs Ghazala Farooq JP MBE of the Council of British Pakistanis (Scotland) had been working for the Council for ten years, starting as a volunteer. They operate a service helping people of all nationalities with semi-legal advice, referring them to other agencies as appropriate. She explains that they work with the Scottish Executive and the police and were launched with a one-off grant from the Lothian Regional Council, although since then have received no funding from local authorities.
Mrs Farooq admits the title of the organisation is confusing, it is the Council OF British Pakistanis, and is not only FOR British Pakistanis, and she explains that they have so far helped people of 45 nationalities.
In the second programme item we see a Tai Chi session in progress as instructors with the Taoist Tai Chi Society describe the health benefits of practising Tai Chi and how it is now part of the cardiac rehabilitation programme for local people recovering from hospital treatment.
Finally, in a short feature on the care of elderly Chinese people in Edinburgh, the sheltered housing manager at Cathay Court describes her job, helping tenants who don’t speak any English or even read Chinese, and giving them support with translation and interpretation. And a development worker with Edinburgh Chinese Elderly Support Association describes how they met a need for a day centre for elderly Chinese in the area. This video recording lasts 9 minutes and 35 seconds.
