Frances Davis (WW2 Evacuees) Interview |
|
| This raw, unedited audio recording is of an interview with Frances Davis (born 1919) speaking about her experiences of evacuees coming to stay with her family during the Second World War. The interviewee describes how evacuees could only bring one small case with them, and parents weren’t allowed to visit for at least a fortnight to allow children to settle in. She focuses on two children who came to stay with her, a brother and sister who had been left until last as their mother had pinned a note to them saying “please do not part”. Split for the first night with hopes of finding them somewhere together, the two ended up having to stay apart. The interviewee explains how her family had the little girl (6 years old upon arrival) staying with them for 6 years, and talks of her schooling during the time. Remaining in touch with the evacuee family, the interviewee finishes by explaining how the children went on to have successful careers and families of their own. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref.: 72, MA200/074/074). Further information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha. This audio recording lasts 14 minutes and 9 seconds |
