Do It How You Do It Best

This audio documentary, broadcast originally on ‘Sheffield Live!’ Radio, profiles rappers and hip-hop producers in and around the Sheffield area, some of whom have released records to critical acclaim in the national music press. The programme includes discussions of the artists’ backgrounds, musical influences, getting into hip-hop and becoming part of the scene. There is an examination of recording music, putting records out on self-run local labels and the techniques used to to raise awareness and interest in the music. Examples of the artists’ songs are featured throughout, illustrating the variety of styles and subject matter. One French artist, Le Spy, speaks about his experiences of community projects, and what he hopes to achieve through the exchange of French and English musical ideas whilst he is in Sheffield. Other discussion topics include the Uk Hip-Hop industry, struggles for success, the specifice of the sheffield scene and debate about about the importance of music over lyrics (and vice versa). The piece concludes with the artists summing up how they plan to convey their messages, and what they hope to achieve. Artists featured include: Hoodz Underground, Doyen and Cocka, Supra, J. Rugged, Kastro, Le Spy, Bungle, Ujigami, Dr. Tigerninesteen and Liquid Knights. This audio recording lasts 54 minutes and 43 seconds.
