This website offers a free online training kit for women on how to use the Internet. It was developed by Women On Line, a project of the AMARC Europe Women’s Network to encourage women in using new technologies. Offered in the Spanish, German and English languages, the training materials consist of seven modules, a glossary, a trainer’s guide and an introduction. Aware that the use of new technology is producing new gaps between already disadvantaged groups in society and those who are in possession of knowledge and resources, Women Online is exploring the possibilities offered by the new technologies, particularly for women working in community radio. With a simple, clear and friendly presentation the website offers information on the Internet, what it is and how it works, e-mail, the World Wide Web and how to find information on the Internet. Further modules deal with the creation of web pages, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and newsgroups, and finally audio editing and radio on the Internet. Navigation of the site is straightforward and obvious, building into a considerable library of information of value to anyone working with the Internet for the first time or an experienced user. The modules are presented as a series of pdf files, which may take some time to download over a standard dial-up connection, making them ideal for reproduction in printed form rather than providing an interactive learning system to be used on-line. The site includes links to partner organisations, online resources and suppliers of suitable software. The site avoids excessive use of technical terminology but offers a great deal of information of value to anyone working with the Internet for the first time or more experienced users wanting to develop their skill in originating material on the web.
