This is an audio compilation of interview extracts in which a variety of speakers recall entertainment and leisure pursuits available in Leicester at the beginning of the 20th century. We hear about theatre-going activites, with descriptions of the different playhouses in the city and the shows they presented, including the Palace, Opera House, Theatre Royal, Pavilion and the Empire (later called the Hippodrome). Some contributors remember Music Hall, and performers of the day such as 'Birstall Jack the Barrel' a barrel organ player. There is recollection of the arrival and development of cinema in Leicester and it’s effect on other forms of popular entertainment. Other pastimes are remembered, including card playing and games of pitch and toss in the public houses of Sanvey Gate, the Bake House and the Lamp Lighter. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref 392, LO/012/C12), more information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha/. This audio recording lasts 23 minutes and 59 seconds.
