A Trip to the May

Audio programme featuring interviews with the operators of a boat that takes thousands of visitors each year to the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth. Interviewer Chris Wraight chats with the owner and the captain of the ‘May Princess’ as she makes the six mile journey to the island. The owner explains how she has operated the trips for over twenty years, going from a 12 person boat to the current 100 passenger ferry. She describes the background and history of the trips from Anstruther to the Isle of May and the changes she has seen on the island, including considerable increases in the island’s bird population due to strict conservation rules. We also join the skipper in the wheelhouse of the May Princess as he talks to the Forth Coastguard over his ship-to-shore radio. He describes the journey and some of the sights, including dolphins, porpoises and whales, and explains the strict regulations governing the safety of passenger craft. This audio recording lasts for 15 minutes and 57 seconds.
