Community Media, Where Next? (Professor Anthony Everitt)

This is an audio recording of a talk given by Professor Anthony Everitt, (Author of 'New Voices', an independent evaluation of the Access Radio Pilot). He was the Key Note Speaker at the Festival of Community Media held on the 8-10th May 2003 at the Sheffield Showroom.

Professor Anthony Everitt speaks about Community and Access Radio, briefly touching on how it has come about, where it is at the moment and how it might change in the future. In relation to this, he speaks about how the notion of ‘community’ itself is changing; this no longer means groups dictated by geographic proximity. He mentions the voluntary sector in relation to community development and technological developments, such as digital radio, and how these may affect the sector in the future.

The professor discusses what the BBC is doing in terms of community radio, and how this ‘third tier’ is already being seen as a source of individual talent, stories, ideas and community news. He sees that the future for community radio is bright and is likely to become the foundation for such developments by the voluntary sector and others in the future.

This recording was broadcast on ‘Festival FM’ during the festival itself. Other similar recordings made at the time are also available on The Showcase, which can found by searching on ‘CMA Festival’ on The Showcase search engine page. This audio recording lasts 19 minutes and 45 seconds.
