Mainly recorded on Fringe Sunday (part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 1995), this short video programme features the exciting mix of the traditional and the bizarre that has made the Fringe Festival famous worldwide.
Starting with the traditional procession of floats and performers led by a marching pipe band along Princes Street, the video features some of the street performers before focussing on the events of Fringe Sunday where the organiser claims some 200,000 people are enjoying free theatre, music, dance, children’s entertainments and community projects in the sunshine.
The Fringe Sunday organiser outlines the development of the Fringe Festival as a recognised event since 1945 and says it has now grown to become the biggest arts festival in the world. Her open-air event promotes over 650 acts encompassing every art form imaginable.
We see some brief samples of some of the fringe performances and some of the other children’s shows at the Festival with favourable reaction from visitors to the festival.
The programme is simply constructed and edited but gives a flavour of this major event on the Scottish arts scene. This video recording lasts 18 minutes and 52 seconds.
