Clara Young introduces a Scottish Colourists exhibition at the McManus Galleries in Dundee and Abertay University presents its software development course ‘Dare to be Digital’ in a film edition of the series ‘Art in Scotland’.
In late 2001, over 40 works by Fergusson, Peploe, Cadell and Hunter were brought together at the McManus Galleries for their ‘Colourist Connection’ exhibition. Clara Young is Arts Curator at the McManus and she describes the Scottish Colourists as an important group of artists who worked together in the early part of the twentieth century. As she introduces the exhibition and outlines the development of the use of colour in Scottish art, we see some of the exhibits.
‘Dare to be Digital’ was a creative competition for games software developers held during ten weeks of summer. In the second part of this programme, the team leaders introduce their projects which range from a console-based shoot-em-up game and a futuristic flight simulator to a knowledge-based survey product. We see the teams working on the programs and see some examples of their finished work as they praise the intensive 10-week course.
The scheme was the brainchild of Ian Marshall of the University of Abertay in Dundee. He explains that the intention was to provide students with technical support, access to facilities and some money while they gained experience of developing a game or entertainment product and developed a business plan for the project.
The feature ends with the presentation of a £1,000 cheque to the winning software team. This video recording lasts 13 minutes and 40 seconds.
