Europhonix - Tuning In (4 of 6)

This audio piece is the fourth of six tracks which make up “Europhonix”; a series of musical pieces taking inspiration from the theme of “Home, Away & Journeys”. Sound artist Robert Jarvis worked alongside students from three secondary schools on the devising and recording of the series of atmospheric compositions. The pieces were created to be heard as a ‘travelling’ installation playing to an invited audience during the journey between Calais and Folkestone on the Eurotunnel train. Students worked for one day a week for seven weeks on various listening and sound mapping exercises connected with the themes; the results of which informed the final pieces. The project’s intention was also to introduce alternative and experimental approaches to both the playing and teaching of music; to get the pupils to think about it in a new and different way. “Europhonix” was nominated for the 2003 British Composer Awards as a finalist in the Community/Educational Project category and is also being used as a model project on a British Council tour on music education in New Zealand. The other “Europhonix” compositions can also be found on The Showcase. For further information see http://robertjarvis.com . This audio recording lasts 5 minutes and 2 seconds.
