Arthur & Wilfred Winfield Interview (2 of 2 - 1910s - 1950s) |
|
| This audio recording is the first part of an unedited oral history interview with brothers Wilfred and Arthur Winfield, in which they speak about their childhood and working lives across the twentieth century. A wide range of employment is covered, including working for the gas board, shop assistant, gardener and chauffeur. Wilfred speaks about his final job as caretaker at his former school, for 13 years up until his retirement. He discusses his various duties including cleaning floors, the heating system and general maintenance during the holidays. He fondly includes anecdotes about how many of the children began to call him ‘Granddad’ after they heard his Granddaughter, who attended the school, saying “Ta ta (bye bye) Granddad”. Wilfred also talks about his home and marriage in the 1930s, and touches upon current hobbies including bowls and holidaying around the East Coast of Britain, never having been abroad. Arthur describes having to leave his job as a coal miner as a young man because of chest infections. He speaks about other positions he tried before returning to work in the pit on the coalface. He also held jobs later in life as an engineer and dye-works employee until retiring, age 65. The interview concludes with both brothers speaking about childhood games, pastimes and fairground attractions as part of the “Whitwick Wakes” and Co-Op Treats, which were especially for children. Please note that due to the unedited nature of this recording, it ends rather abruptly mid-discussion. The first part of this joint interview is also available on The Showcase. The original recordings are held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref.: 3, MA200/003/003/A/B). Further information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha. This audio recording lasts 46 minutes and 18 seconds. |
