Harold Hawke Interview (1910s - 1930s) |
|
| This audio recording is of an unedited oral history interview with Howard Hawke (1910 – 1989) speaking about his life both in the army and on the farm during most of the twentieth century. He begins by speaking about his childhood in Cornwall as the son of a Blacksmith, and how he often helped out his mother, who was deaf, in looking after his siblings. We learn about the school he attended and how he was often caned as a method of punishment, something he suggests happened more often to those who were seen to have a lower social status. He goes on to give specific descriptions of duties he held whilst working on a farm in rural Cornwall in the 1920s. These include milking, looking after livestock and stone walling and talks about how he came to win many prizes and trophies in the latter, through competitions held between farms in the community. The 1926 General Strike is mentioned and the resulting loss of work, which led to his joining the army. Here he details many activities including basic training, boxing, being stationed in Gibraltar and eventually being sent to India in the early 1930s. During this time he trained to work as a farrier looking after horses, eventually becoming a Farrier Major. He relates in detail a journey made from Lahore to Afghanistan over mountains with horses and mules and the travelling conditions the men had to endure. Please note much of this has interview been recorded at a low level with some muffling in places. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref.: 2, MA200/002/002). Further information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha. This audio recording lasts 1 hour, 28 minutes and 59 seconds. |
