Laundry Maid Interview (1910s - 1950s)

An unedited audio recording of an interview with a woman born in 1912, who worked for some time in domestic service at Coleorton Hall in Lincolnshire. She begins by explaining how she was rescued from drowning at the hands of her poverty-stricken mother as a baby, and how she was first fostered, then raised in a children’s home. She goes on to describe her teenage years in domestic service, detailing food, recreation, general routine and strict conditions. She recalls her duties as a laundry maid, the uniforms worn, Monday wash days, ironing, and the difficulties of working in the cold during winter. Rates of pay, working hours, spare time and entertainment are covered. She remembers reading and listening to the wireless, attending the Methodist Church and the occaisional musical performance. Saturday outings and shopping are discussed, although time and money was usually scarce. One item she remembers buying was a gold ring, bought from a travelling salesman for a guinea, (6d a week), which her granddaughter now wears with pride. The audio quality is generally good throughout but there are a few occasions where the sound fades out a little. The recording also ends abruptly. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref.: 1, MA200/001/001). Further information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha
