Tree, Fruit and All (1910s - 1950s)

An audio compilation of extracts drawn from interviews with three nuns, describing their lives in holy orders. Areas covered include beliefs and activities, the convent regime, and the changes seen in religious practice during the twentieth century. Sister de Lourdes recalls her calling into the convent in 1914 when she was sixteen, and the subsequent separation from her family. She describes her work and daily routine, the strictly regulated religious life, and her progression from novice and postulant up to taking her final vows. The significance of the nun’s habit is described, along with details of changes over the years. There are also recollections of the impact of the first and second world wars and activities undertaken by nuns at other times. Sister Mary Joseph remembers entering holy orders as a novice at the age of 24. Despite the curtailment of her freedom she recalls being very happy, maintaining contact with her family by letter and telephone. She discusses aspects of the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, and explains the importance of the vow of chastity, which she sees as a vital aspect of discipleship. Sister Mary Ephrem recalls having to overcome the resistance of her family when she chose to become a nun at the age of 32. She describes her early years in the convent, and recounts the rules that have governed her religious life. Sister De Lourdes speaks about how the role of authority in the order has changed, with nuns now expected to think for themselves as much as possible. She outlines the changing role of religious orders since the industrial revolution and describes how sisters today are more active in missions and peace movements. Discussing the continuing relevance of the vow of chastity she explains: “We give God the tree, fruit and all”. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref 00413, LO/033/C33), more information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha/
