Real Change for the Real World? |
|
| This audio recording of a lecture, at the Centre for Human Ecology, is given by Mr. John Forbes, who worked with a Business Environmental Partnership, an enterprise agency in Scotland. He speaks about what his organisation does in terms of helping businesses address environmental issues. He begins with speaking about how it is easy for an outsider to have an overview of environmental and human rights issues and note what is globally important, but this is very different to actually putting measures into practice as a business person. It is this enterprise agency’s role to approach and engage these people in thinking about environmental issues, introducing them as issues rather than problems. Their main function is to encourage businesses and economic agencies to take into account environmental issues. For example, waste management and minimisation is an area where many savings can be made. Each company is dealt with on an individual basis – usually small to medium businesses typically employing less than 100 people. The estimated cumulative value of savings made as a result of this type of work is around £2 million. When these practical savings can be demonstrated, it has a big impact on the change of attitude towards environmental issues. This is a main objective – to change the behaviour of businesses towards these issues in terms of day to day operations. The first challenge is to make environmental issues relevant to the company – many don’t think that it is. Businesses have often see it is an additional cost, particularly in the past, but now they are recognising the environment more as a relevant issue and see the benefits of investment in this area. He goes on to briefly hand over to his colleague, Rachael Cox who gives some more specific examples from a case study of the Anglian Water Group. There are referenced slides used throughout the lecture, but not being able to see these does not detract from the lecture itself. This audio recording lasts 1 hour 2 minutes and 51 seconds. |
