Space, Sewers and Beyond : Head to Head (Audio Described)

The “Space, Sewers and Beyond” collection of short films, were all made by young people aged between 14-19, who are learning disabled or hearing-impaired. “Massive Message Productions” engaged young people with some creative practitioners to work together to incorporate disability access into production values, processes and product. The aim of the project was not only to give the young people access to filmmaking, but also to involve artists and filmmakers who had not worked with learning disabled or hearing-impaired young people before. A DVD was produced, with many of the films including subtitles, audio description and sign interpretation. All these alternate versions of the films can also be found on ‘The Showcase’ website, along with a short video of credits of all involved in “Space, Sewers and Beyond”. This short film is an animated film in which, “One boring day an Orange idea is born in a flash of lightning. Deep in someone’s brain it turns into an astronaut, climbs into a rocket and sets off on a mission to travel from head to head spreading inspiration.” A wide variety of animation techniques are inventively employed including stop-motion, hand drawn animation and live action video. This version of the film includes an audio description; the film itself is mostly without dialogue. There is also a subtitled version of the film available on The Showcase. This video recording last 6 minutes and 48 seconds.
