Engineering Genesis Lecture - The Commercialisation of Agricultural Biotechnology

An audio recording of one of a series of lectures delivered in the Centre for Human Ecology Public Lecture Series, exploring the ethical and social issues raised by genetic engineering and biotechnology. Steven Wildridge, UK Director of Monsanto plc suggests that the yield increases made possible by genetic modification of crops will be essential to meet the world’s future food needs. In the course of a knowledgeable and detailed talk on the GM industry Mr. Waldridge assures us that it is not in Monsanto’s best interests to be irresponsible in the field trials of new products, they are in this business for the long term benefit of consumers, producers and of course their own shareholders. The 43-minute lecture is followed by a further 42 minutes of questions from the audience. Unfortunately some of these are not picked up clearly by the microphone. The questions cover the ethics of continuing royalty payments, the terminator gene and corporations owning patents on genetic code. Please note that the projected slides referred to during the lecture are not shown, but this does not detract from the talk itself. This audio recording lasts 1 hour 25 minutes and 45 seconds.
