2001 Schumacher Lecture - Combating Climate Change

An audio recording of the 2001 Schumacher Lecture by Susan Roaf, Professor of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, in which she details the need to rethink the design of our buildings in order to combat climate change. The unedited recording, made at the Centre for Human Ecology includes a 40-minute lecture followed by a further 20 minutes in which she responds to questions from the audience. Susan Roaf begins with a series of charts drawn up in 1939 purporting to show a relationship between climate and “degrees of civilisation”. Our attempts to control the climate in which we live and work have centred on air-conditioning, a solution that Susan Roaf claims is not required. Air conditioning, she says, is only needed to compensate for poor environmental design of buildings. A further problem is the “heat island”. Studies have shown that the centre of a modern city can be 10 degrees Celsius warmer than the outskirts, thus making a bad situation worse. With further examples from around the world she shows that the ideal zero-energy housing solution varies from place to place. Finally she argues that we have built a generation of buildings which are creating the climate change to which they cannot adapt. We need a new kind of passive building, and while architects in general have not taken this on board ordinary people find the properties of low-energy homes very attractive. Many of the questions from members of the audience are not clearly audible but the resulting discussion covers, amongst other issues, the teaching of architecture, giving the public a greater say in the kinds of new housing available, the future design of social housing, questions of urban density and practical difficulties in finding the best materials and solutions. Please note that slides are referrred to throughout, but this does not detract from the overall lecture. This audio recording lasts 1 hour and 55 seconds.
