A short black and white film, made in the style of a silent movie by a members of the Jackass Youth Theatre in Wear Valley, County Durham. Billed as 'a melodrama to set your heart racing', "Off the Rails" was made through the Film Council's First Light initiative, supported by the Lottery, originally shot on DVCam. The story tells of Peggy, a vicar's daughter and her 2 admirers – Reggie, a kind and loving butcher, and Arnold, a mean and twisted greengrocer. The rival suitors compete for the role of Peggy’s beau but things turn nasty when Arnold is rejected. In true silent classic fashion, Arnold hijacks a steam locomotive and ties Peggy to the tracks. Will Reggie get to Peggy in time, and will Arnold get his comeuppance? With original Wurlitzer organ music for the soundtrack, title captions for the text/dialogue and grainy film effects, this funny and entertaining piece has been well produced and reflects the era of early film well. This video recording lasts 23 minutes and 30 seconds.
