Under The Same Sky

A video documentary in which young people from places such as Afghanistan, Ukraine and Kurdistan express their responses to living In Manchester, UK. Still images and photographic effects are combined with traditional documentary style video footage to illustrate the thoughts and feelings of the group. Starting from the Amnesty International quote: “A new refugee is created every 21 seconds”. The young people speak of their experiences in their home countries, the reasons they had to leave and what it was like to move to the UK. Many express the desire to return home, alongside memories of conflict they would rather forget. One young man speaks of how he saw family members seriously injured. A young woman recalls her arrival in the UK and she was placed in a detention centre until the relevant paperwork could be organised. Included in the piece are sections of prose and poetry, expressing the young people’s depth of feeling relating to peace, conflict and their new lives. This video recording lasts 11 minutes and 17 seconds.
