Energy and Order is the Ultimate Currency |
|
An audio recording of a lecture given at the Centre for Human Ecology by Dr. Ulrich Loening focussing on uses, theories and implications of energy as a potential source of currency, from a scientific and ecological standpoint. Focussing on the fundamental principals of energy in life, Dr Loening examines the efficiency of solar energy in comparison with fossil fuels and the ways in which nature maximises this source. He also shows how in studying these processes the scientific view can further our wonder and respect for nature.Dr Loening looks at ways of harnessing solar power, leading to some explanation of the laws of thermodynamics in relation to energy depletion, and contrasts this with ideas about money which can be used over and over again. He goes on to explain the concept of the biosphere and equilibrium; the balance of nature and how this in itself lends weight to the Gaia theory (originated by Jim Lovelock) of the Earth as an organism, maintaining life as a co-operative system. A strong argument is also put forward regarding the problems of the fossil fuel economy leading to war due to the geographical concentration of sources. In contrast, global access to solar power is discussed in terms of being an essential precursor to global peace. Calling for an evaluation of current energy consumption and requirements; Dr Loening explains how new political and economic strategies are required to redress the situation. Some ideas and suggestions are presented, such as reducing global warming through dealing with deforestation, and changes in tax policy. There is also reference to the need for better awareness of the issues amongst politicians. A well presented lecture in plain English, and aimed at a wide general audience, perhaps from GCSE level and upward. An overhead projector is referred to at various stages but the audio alone is sufficient to clearly understand the points being made. This audio recording lasts 57 minutes and 37 seconds.
