Menzies Campbell Interview |
|
An audio interview with Menzies Campbell, MP for North East Fife since 1987, in which he talks about his life, his work and his hopes of the future from his constituency surgery in Cupar. He recalls his “all-round education” at Glasgow University as a time of great activity in a number of fields and outlines his views on the importance of sport in helping some people to develop their talents and self confidence. He describes his university friendships with John Smith and Donald Dewar and also recalls running against O.J. Simpson on an indoor track whilst at University in California – and beating him! He describes the start of his political career in 1974 when standing for the Liberals in Greenock in 1974, and discusses his reasons for not standing for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats when Paddy Ashdown resigned. There is a discussion focussing on North East Fife, the beautiful countryside and the architecture and heritage of the fishing villages. He acknowledges the housing problems faced by local people and describes the policies and legislation that led to this. He also describes his future hopes in arresting the trend of decline that has struck the two great industries in the region, fishing and farming. This audio recording lasts for 21 minutes and 10 seconds.
