An audio programme featuring a husband and wife team who collect and restore vintage tractors on their homestead in Scotland. Describing how tractors came to revolutionise farming worldwide, presenter Chris Wraight asks how much we really know about them. He talks to Joyce and David Symington about their collection of some 35 tractors, which began in 1983, and their plans for a future museum. The collectors explain the attributes of the various manufacturers and models, and describe their trips to America to track down elusive spare parts. David takes us on a tour of some of the collection, focussing on a 1948 Fordson model, an American 1924 cross-engine Case tractor, and their oldest exhibit, the only example in the UK of a 1915 J.I.Case tractor. Joyce discusses the health and safety considerations that have driven the development of the modern tractor, pointing out that farming is second only to fishing as the most dangerous form of employment in Scotland. This audio recording lasts for 22 minutes and 22 seconds.
